Combat (2006)

Country: Belgium
Release Year: 2006
Language: French
Subtitle: English

Told in three parts, Patrick Carpentier's "The Irregularity of the tearing" is a three part cine-diary on intimacy, sensuality and desire.
The last film of this trilogy is also called Combat. The first film is GOD IS A DOG, 2004 A Letter to the lost lover, an exploration of the depths of intimacy through dazzling Super 8 images. Then comes THE 9 TUESDAYS (Les 9 mardis), 2005 The banality of ssufering as time goes by. A mourning song, the intimate diary of sorrow. and finally, COMBAT, 2006.

Maybe the combination of genres (experimental/ action) doesn't really add up to something easily imaginable, but I believe that it describes the film kind of accurately. Imagine if you will something that lives between Fight Club and Thoreau with some Genet thrown in, and you might get an idea of it's mentality . Two young men fight with each other. They hit each other very hard. But their fighting remains an act of love. There is no prize. There is no winner. There is no pride. A voice-over narrator tells a strange story in which he rediscovers the extent of his desire. Questions arise: does one inflict pain on the other or on oneself? How can we let go in a world in which we are taught not to let ourselves be pushed around? COMBAT is a dissection of pain, of abandonment. Winner of the Teddy Jury Award, Berlin Film Festival 2006 for its exceptional artistic quality and for its honest depiction of unsettling desire.
