The currency has lost nearly 50-percent of its value against the dollar this year. In a bid to stop the bleeding, Russia_s central bank raised its key interest rate from 10.5 to 17 percent on Tuesday. It_s a desperation move, and the higher rates will likely send Russia into a recession. Now to a disturbing find in Brazil. Scientists have discovered a super-bacteria in waters that will host a number of aquatic events in the 2016 Olympics. Researchers taking samples from Flamengo beach near Rio de Janeiro found the superbug, which is resistant to most modern medications. The bacteria is normally only found in hospital waste. Here_s the thing, nearly 70-percent of Rio_s sewage flows DIRECTLY into nearby Guanabara Bay. In its Olympic bid, the city pledged to reduce pollution in the bay by 80 percent. And Denmark is the latest country to lay claim to part of the Arctic. The area in question is nearly 350-thousand square miles of the continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean. Its actually twenty times bigger than Denmark itself. The Scandinavian nation made the claim by filing documents to the United Nations, and now joins the battle between Canada, Russia, and Norway for ownership of the resource rich region. It_s believed the shelf holds 30 percent of the world_s undiscovered natural gas and 15 percent of its oil.

But they_re probably also disappointed about the LACK of support from a few other major players. Welcome to the newsroom everyone1. EA) The world_s largest free encyclopedia Wikipedia has shut itself down to oppose the US Stop Online Piracy Act also known as SOPA (SO-pa). Anyone who visited the site on Wednesday was greeted with a black screen with the phrase Imagine a world without free knowledge. Popular news aggregate site Reddit has also joined the campaign. PP) Other major players including Facebook and Twitter have voiced their criticism of the bill but did not participate in the blackout. SOPA would give the US Justice Department the power to block websites associated with piracy from appearing in search engine results. However critics say the law is vaguely written and could give the feds the authority to block all sorts of content online. 2. EA) The Turkish government has blasted Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry over controversial remarks he made during Monday night_s GOP debate in South Carolina. Perry didn_t hold back when asked about how the US should deal with the NATO ally in the future.SOUNDBITE-On Tuesday the Turkish government condemned Perry_s comments calling the Texas governor_s remarks both unfounded and inappropriate.PP) Turkey also added that it joined NATO when Perry was just two years old and was quick to point out its long history of fighting terrorism. For his part Perry is sticking to his guns and maintains that Turkey does not deserve American trust and criticized it for being a country that allows honor killings. 3. EA) In other US political news members of congress returned to work this week in Washington amidst historically low approval ratings A Washington-Post ABC News poll put their approval rating at just 13 percent. And a Gallup poll in December generated even lower numbers Lawmakers were welcomed back to work by hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters who had gathered outside the Capitol.PP) Democratic representative Steny Hoyer (STEN-ee HOY-ur) says that Americans have a right to feel anxious and angry about the recent lack of progress on the country_s most serious issues. We_ll start off in Mexico, where results from the national election have lead to a series of protests. Although Institutional Revolutionary Party candidate Enrique PeÒa Nieto became the presumed president-elect, his main opponent has so far refused to concede. Supporters of the Democratic Revolution Party_s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took to the streets, echoing his belief that the election had been, quote, plagued by irregularities. Their protests have included blockades and sit-ins throughout the country. This is in spite of the fact several exit polls found PeÒa Nieto to have clinched the presidency. Official results aren_t expected until Wednesday. The U.S. has deployed wide-scale military reinforcements to the Persian Gulf. The move is a preemptive decision geared at deterring Iranian forces from shutting down the Strait of Hormuz HORE-mooz, which has become a hub of activity in recent months. With more on this story, let_s check in with guest anchor Laura. Eila, in addition to monitoring the Strait_s shipping routes, the US is increasing its number of fighter jets in the region, should the standoff over Iran_s nuclear program escalate. The US Navy is also beefing up its presence in Gulf waters, doubling the number of minesweepers in the area. This comes as the U.S. and its allies have begun strictly enforcing their embargo on Iranian oil exports. Speaking under condition of anonymity a US military official didn_t mince words, saying the message to Iran was Don_t even think about sending your boats out to harass our vessels or commercial shipping. We_ll put them on the bottom of the Gulf. That_s a pretty bold statement Eila. It is, but it seems like the US isn_t messing around this time. I guess we_ll see how Iran responds.Well, the ball is definitely in their court but if history is any indication, they won_t take that type of threat lightly. We_ll keep everyone posted on the developments, thanks Laura. Let_s shift our gaze over to the eastern United States now, where record temperatures and violent storms have left millions of residents without power. Maryland, Washington DC, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia all declared states of emergency, after hurricane-force winds lead to blackouts and extensive property damage. To make matters worse, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has confirmed over two thousand record temperatures were either matched or broken since June 25th. Power companies have warned it may take several days before electricity is completely restored. And unfortunately, there doesn_t seem to be any end to the searing heat in the near future.
