Victoria Sinclair is standing by to get us up to speed on the day_s biggest stories. Vic?Yes thank you Rachelle. It_s the day that millions of Americans have been waiting for as voters head to the polls to select their next President. It_s been a tight race that_s gone right down to the wire. For more on what_s sure to be an exciting election day we_ll turn to Eila Adams.That_s right Vic tens of millions of US citizens are heading to the polls to make their voices heard. Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have spent many months on the campaign trail trying to sway voters. It_s been a long tough and expensive race. The candidates_ combined campaign costs have topped the two billion dollar mark. But now the ultimate decision rests with the people. Early polls show that Obama and Romney are still neck and neck Vic although the President appears to have a slight lead in some important swing states. Officials expect to have some concrete election results by midnight. Traditionally on Election Day both candidates spend the final hours in their home states. But Mitt Romney did away with tradition on Tuesday making one last dash for votes in two crucial swing states. Romney made quick stops in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and Cleveland Ohio. He took time to thank volunteers and also looked to drum up a last minute surge of support. And it just may have worked Obama still has a slight lead in Ohio Vic but some experts say Romney is coming on in Pennsylvania. So after his last ditch campaign stops where will Mr. Romney be spending election night?Romney will be watching the final numbers come in from a rally in Boston. Obama meanwhile will be doing the same at a convention centre in Chicago.Should be a very long and very exciting night. Thank you Eila.As the numbers pour in on election night many viewers - especially those of you outside of the US - may wonder how it all works. You see the US president is not decided by a simple popular vote. Instead a process called the electoral college is applied. Each state is given a certain number of electoral votes determined by the size of its Congressional delegation. California for example has 55 electoral votes while Montana has only 3. There are 538 votes in total so the winning number for either candidate is 270. In essence Mr. Romney could actually garner more of the popular vote nationwide than Barack Obama but still lose the election and vice versa.With that it_s time we took a quick break from the headlines. The death toll has now risen to at least 56 people - 28 in New York City alone - with many people still listed as missing. New York mayor Michael Bloomberg didn_t mince words saying he expects the number to go up. But the city is beginning to recover. Portions of the subway system are operating again. However due to the effect of the salt water in the system it_s uncertain when full functionality will be restored. For now the Metropolitan Transit Authority is waiving fares.Meanwhile US President Barack Obama is going back on the campaign trail after taking a few days off to deal with Sandy. On Wednesday he toured the devastation in New Jersey with state governor Chris Christie. With more on that here_s EA.Thanks Vic. Obama promised New Jersey residents that he wouldn_t let bureaucracy get in the way of recovery and pledged quote We are here for you. The president is now set to hit Wisconsin Nevada and Colorado for rallies. His itinerary is going to be booked solid in the following days as he attempts to make up for lost campaign time. However some analysts say Obama_s handling of the Sandy crisis Vic will do more for him than any campaign speech back to youThanks Eila and both candidates ought to have plenty of motivation to make a final push over the next couple days because the newest polls show they_re neck and neck Kat Curtis joins us now with the latest facts and figures. That_s right Vic we COULD be headed towards a photo finish Just days before the election a new NBC NewsWall Street JournalMarist Polls show that Mitt Romney is inching closer to Barack Obama in a number of states. Earlier this month Obama had a 6-point lead in Wisconsin. Well that_s been whittled down to just 3 points. In New Hampshire Romney is now just 2 points behind Obama. The gap was 7 in September. One state where it looks like Obama CAN breathe easy Vic is Iowa where he leads by a comfortable 6 point margin. Sounds like it_s going right down to the wire. Should be a very exciting couple of days ahead Thanks Kat. We_ll have more of today_s news shortly but in the meantime let_s check in with Natasha Olenski for a preview of business. What_s the financial forecast this week Nat?Well Vic we all know Hurricane Sandy_s taken its toll on Main Street. And unfortunately WALL Street_s taken a pretty big hit as well courtesy of the New York Stock Exchange closing down. That_s right ladies It_s the California smoking crackdown that could be coming to a city near you Council members in the suburb of San Rafael have voted unanimously in favor of a smoking ban in condos duplexes and other multi-family dwellings. And don_t think this is a one of a kind deal either. Politicians and academics agree that the ban will eventually spread around the country. Not that the law is without its critics. Opponents to the bill compare it to tyranny saying it punishes people for what they do in their own homes. Conservative radio show host Glenn Beck is putting his money where his big mouth is by launching a brand new fashion line. Beck_s always been a loud and proud patriot so it_s no surprise his new denim line is produced strictly in the good ol_ US of A. Beck says he was fed up with watching jean manufacturers packing up to head overseas and so he decided to do something about it. His jeans are called 1791 Supply and Co since fittingly that_s the year the Bill of Rights was added to the constitution. But Beck_s brand of denim freedom doesn_t come cheap. The jeans sell for 130 dollarsHere_s an example of what can happen to you if you have too much money and WAY too much free time on your hands. An American venture called The Falcon Project has announced that it will use a 45 foot airship to track wait for it... BIGFOOT. Oh yes my friends the truth is out there and the Aurora Mk 2 Airship will find it... eventually. At least that_s the hope of gold dredger and Falcon Project founder William Barnes. Barnes claims to have seen Bigfoot in 1997. The helium airship will use thermal imaging and high res cameras over the California mountains to locate the hairy beast.
