His first feature film, The Immoral Mr. Teas (1959), grossed over $1 million at the box office, making him one of the first independent filmmakers in history. In the following years, realizing his creative vision, Russ created an entire cinematic universe full of genuine eroticism, intense emotion, subtle irony, sharp social critique, and other clichés, as well as genuine, 100% madness.
The films Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Motor Psycho are rightfully considered the pinnacles of his work. Meyer elevated the sexploitation genre to a pedestal, setting the bar so high that to this day, no other director of this type of film, with the possible exception of Quentin Tarantino, has come close to his best work in terms of execution and depth of both plot and character development.
Meyer's unique film language hinders the appreciation of his work in Russia. He's too old for popular cinema, and, to put it simply, he's too big for arthouse cinema, as we understand it. Yet his films are not simply high-quality. A true innovator of the genre, the director crafts epic-powerful canvases from the most mundane, yawn-inducingly banal, and vulgar plots. Only the aforementioned beautiful breasts, slender waists, and truthfully simple faces of his heroines prevent most Russian fans of "intellectual" cinema from penetrating this special world. Since the late 1960s, the now-renowned American film critic Roger Ebert has become Meyer's regular collaborator. He wrote the screenplays for three films, including Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
Russ Meyer often serves as both director and cinematographer for his films, though he has made a point of using virtually no moving camera, shooting from static vantage points and achieving the effect of movement using
